It has been said of E. "MIKE" McVAUGH, that he "is a
talent to make each portrait as unique as the subject he
is commissioned to paint". Mike was born and raised in
New Jersey, a Quaker descendant of Betsy Ross.
Educated at George School and Rollins College, Mike
exhibited an early interest in the art of the portrait. A
Central Florida resident since 1971, he won awards for his work and gained
clients by participating in local art shows from 1975 to 1987. In January
1981 Mike made the career decision to be a portrait specialist who sought
God's guidance in all matters. Mike works in oil, pastel, acrylic, pencil,
and charcoal, from life and/or from photos. A recent five year member of
the Portrait Society of America, among his 800 subjects today are business
and professional people of Florida and many other states. Past and present
masters such as Rembrandt, Ingres, Stuart, Mr. Everett Raymond Kinstler,
Mr Daniel Greene, Mr. Yousuf Karsh, and the teachings of Jesus Christ
have had a lasting influence on his work.
ARTIST STATEMENT: My art and life were transformed by a life
changing period of spiritual renewal during the 1980s that unexpectedly
birthed a positive realism creative vision*. A positive-realism approach to
creating involves looking for and seeing the good in life and translating that
affirmative vision to one's art and services. Positive-realism says, It Can be
done, with a synergistic application of faith and hard work and affirmative
vision ... that God is the greatest Artist.
ARTIST VS COMPUTER: A longstanding student of the American
Presidency, Mike is also the artist now challenging any computer to An
American Presidential Portrait Challenge. A unique Artist vs. Computer
challenge that is being made for the people, to fulfill a promise made, and
one that is to benefit agencies and organizations that offer Hope to the
Addicted and their Families.
